Deep in the rural mountains of Haiti, in a dusty village where life is hard and food is scarce, 3-year-old Tisine’s eyes were glazed with pain.

​He showed signs of kwashiorkor, a horrible symptom of malnutrition that often causes intense swelling and extreme discomfort.
In a family with 11 children to take care of, his mom simply couldn’t keep up with the needs of her large family.

​Tisine was miserable. He didn’t eat much. He didn’t receive enough nutrients. He struggled to grow. His hair turned red from malnourishment. Tisine cried and slept all the time. He never had enough energy to play.

​Overwhelmed and worried, his mom carried her son for miles to get him to FMSC partner, Real Hope for Haiti. Because of the meals you funded and packed, Real Hope for Haiti was able to feed Tisine MannaPack™ Rice.

He soon gained five pounds. His mom was so relieved and excited to see her son healthy!​

Sweet Mary Joy struggled to grow. She was 3 years old and weighed only 17.6 pounds, more than 10 pounds below what a 3-year-old normally weighs.

​​Her parents lived in a small mountainous community in the Philippines. Mary Joy’s father had a difficult time finding work, so they often didn’t have enough money to buy food.
Mary Joy had been severely malnourished when she was a baby. This chronic lack of nutrition caused her to be weak and sick all the time. Mary Joy stopped feeling hungry. She didn’t want to eat.

In the midst of their hopelessness, FMSC food arrived. Through our partnership with International Care Ministries, the MannaPack™ Rice meals you packed reached Mary Joy’s grateful family.

Her mother didn’t give up. She fed her daughter little spoonsful of FMSC food until Mary Joy slowly began to eat. Little by little, she gained back her appetite.​

They stared blankly. Their eyes said it all.

​The two brothers, Michelet, 9, and Machelet, 8, clung to each other along the edge of a steep rocky mountain path in Haiti. They had been abandoned by all of their loved ones and left alone to die.

​Michelet was so malnourished he couldn’t walk. Machelet suffered severe pain from bloating due to kwashiorkor (an excruciating form of malnutrition). They just sat by the road, hoping someone might help.
Thankfully, a woman from a nearby village noticed the boys. She took them to a mountain clinic run by our food partner, Real Hope for Haiti (RHFH).

​When they asked Michelet and Machelet what had happened, the boys became visibly nervous and guarded. They didn’t want to talk about it.​

​​“These boys have been neglected for most of their lives and have experienced so many losses,” said RHFH. “We suspect their lives have been full of great sadness and suffering.”

​Michelet and Machelet need time to heal. Both are severely stunted and look like they are only 4 or 5 years old. But in just a few short months, with the help of daily FMSC meals, Michelet gained 10 pounds and Machelet gained 8 pounds after losing the water weight from kwashiorkor.

Until you showed up for them, these precious boys didn’t have hope. Now, they know you care. You sent food. You sent love. You told them they matter. They’re slowly gaining energy and have started smiling all the time!
